Mary Kom qualified for Tokyo Olympics

Mary Kom qualified for Tokyo Olympics after reaching the semi-final at Asian Boxing: Mary Kom, the six-time world champion, got the opportunity to spar at the Olympics, which is going to be held in Tokyo in 2020. She debuted in London Olympics and won bronze.  Now it's her second game appearance as the Indian boxer.

She got qualified by reaching the semi final of Asian boxing qualifiers on Monday in Jordan. The bronze medalist will appear representing India for the second time in the quadrennial event. She defeated the Philippines boxer Irish Magno (5-0) in the quarter final of 51kg category to clinch a place in the Tokyo Olympics qualifier ground.

The initial round was with a commonwealth game bronze medalist Tasmyn Benny of New Zealand where she nailed the victory with 5-0. She earned a ticket to this Asian qualifiers ground by beating Nikhat Zareen in the final boxing Olympic trials in the 51 kg weight category in New Delhi in December.


Zareen, with a little controversy had demanded a fair chance to participate in the Tokyo Olympic qualifiers by challenging the decision of Boxing Federation of India's decision to consider Kom by changing its rule of exempting the gold and silver medalists from the world cup but in vain.

The other players from India who are qualified are Amit Panghal (debut 52kg), Pooja Rani (75 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg), Vikas Krishnan (69 kg), Sathish Kumar (+91 kg)
