Kamal Nath resigns as Cm. Madhya Pradesh Government Falls

In the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections held in November 2018, the Congress won 114 seats, with the support of Samajwadi and Independent Parties. Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath assumed office as CM in Madhya Pradesh. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which won 107 seats, was the main opposition party.

From then on, an internal clash happens between Kamal Nath and another Congress leader, Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is known to be close to Rahul Gandhi. Scindia, who was unhappy with Chief Minister Kamal Nath's stumbling block to his actions during the Rajya Sabha elections and Congress leader nomination, has announced his sudden resignation from the Congress party on March 10. Immediately after the resignation, Jyotiraditya met Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP leader JP Natta in person and joined Bharatiya Janata Party.

  • Then,22 MLAs, including six state ministers, who are backed by Scindia, sent their resignation letter to the Speaker.
  • This caused a crisis in state politics. In the meantime, Governor Lalji Thandan had ordered Kamal Nath to prove a majority.
  • The Supreme Court today ordered Chief Minister Kamal Nath to submit a majority in the legislative session at 5 pm.
  • Meanwhile, the resignation of Congress MLAs was accepted by the Speaker yesterday. Therefore, Kamal Nath lost his majority in the legislative session earlier.
  • At this juncture, Kamal Nath announced that he would resign as Madhya Pradesh Chief minister. He said he would meet the Governor in person and submit his resignation letter.
  • This brings to an end the 15-month Congress rule in Madhya Pradesh. Kamal Nath has resigned as CM without proving his majority.

Following this, the governor is expected to call on the BJP to have 107 MLAs. Reports say that BJP leader and former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan will once again be the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh.
