Kumbh Mela is one of the famous religious festivals celebrated in India in which people from various places gather at the same place. It is considered as the peaceful gathering of people in the world which is held once in 12 years. This famous Kumbh Mela is recognized by UNESCO as INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE of humanity during its 12th session from Dec 4 to 9 at Jeju, South Korea.
Our cultural minister said “It is a proud moment for India that is our sacred Kumbh Mela attains this fame” and he also tweeted “It is one of the largest congregation of pilgrims on earth irrespective of caste, creed or gender”.
Traditionally Kumbh mela is celebrated in four places including Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik district (Nashik and Trimbak), and Ujjain. In each of these sites the date is fixed as per the zodiacal positions of Bṛahaspati (Jupiter), the Sun and the Moon. Last year it was celebrated in Ujjain Simhahasta.
It is one of the world’s famous largest gatherings where people bath at the banks of the holy rivers such as Ganga in Haridwar, Godavari in Nasik, Kshipra in Ujjain and Sangam in Allahabad (Prayag) to receive the blessings of the lord.
It is definitely a delight for us that UNESCO, the largest organization of UN has given this precious fame to our cultural practice which involves the ritual bathing of people from all over the places in the world.
